How to Setup the Console Using an Xbox App?

As an Android user, the process of installing the Xbox app is very easy. All you need to do is go to the Google Play Store and search for the Xbox app. As soon as it shows on the recommended list, you can easily download it to your smartphone. 

The process of downloading it on your iOS device is also similar. You can search for it on the Apple App Store and download the app from there. This app will help you download clips or screenshots of your gameplay that you might have taken from the Xbox Share button. 

Console Setup Using Xbox App

To digitally set up your Xbox console, you can use the Xbox mobile app on your Android or iOS devices by following these steps.

Step 1

Go to the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and download the app. Find the app icon on your menu list and open it. If you are a new user then select set up a console. 

If you have previously used the app and are signed into it then select the Console icon from the top right corner of your Homescreen and select set up a console. 

Enter the code you were provided with from the setup with the Xbox app screen.

Step 2

Next, you need to allow the app and the console to connect. Click join when you receive the notification that says “Xbox wants to join WiFi network” and then click next as soon as the console connects. 

In case you get an error message saying that your smartphone was unable to connect to the console then go to “If your mobile device will not connect to your console during setup”.


If your mobile does not connect to your console, then follow these solutions:

  • Check the status of the Xbox
  • Try to restart the application
  • Restart your console or your mobile device
  • Check your smartphone’s network connection

Step 3

Personalize your console by selecting the language you are most comfortable using and select a location. If your spoken language is not available then choose the one you can easily read to connect your console to the internet and start the system update.

Next, you need to connect your console to the internet via a wired or wireless connection. In the case of a wired connection that you might have made during the physical setup, you can go to the connected screen directly and select “Next” for digital setup.

If the console cannot detect a wired connection then you will be redirected to select one. 

You will find a “Let’s get your console on the Internet” screen where you will either be able to determine why the console did not connect to the internet automatically through the Network Connection Troubleshooter or select one of the wireless networks from the list.

After you have connected to the internet, you need to update your console to the latest version. You can immediately start the download by selecting “Update console”.

You will reach the “Let’s get you signed in” screen at this point where you can click “Next” to sign in to your existing Microsoft account or click on “Create new account”.

After signing into your account, you will reach the “Help make Xbox better” screen where you can select “Send optional data” if you want to share usage information or diagnostics with Microsoft. You can also skip this part by clicking “No thanks”.

Next, you can choose your sign-in and security preferences from one of the following options:

  • No barriers
  • Ask for my passkey
  • Lock it down 

Step 13

If you saved any preferences or settings on a console to the cloud then you can access and save them to this console at this stage. Press the A key to skip to digital setup if you did not previously have a console.

Step 14

To allow your Xbox mobile app to be able to communicate with the console outside of the setup process then select “Turn on” and then select “Enable instant on” or “Skip”.

The app selects a list of apps to pre-install immediately after the update is finished. You can select the apps that you want to install or skip the process for later on.
