Updating our Screens Controls — Rec Room
Rec Room is a strange game. It has lots of different features, and if you aren’t using VR, the whole control system can be difficult to understand.
We’ve found that simply teaching people how to play the game is one of the biggest points of friction for them. It’s especially true for new players but we also hear this feedback from long-term players too.
We don’t think Rec Room has to be so weird to play even when you aren’t using VR. So we’re planning to release an update to the game’s control scheme for all of our screens.
Our primary goal for this project is to ensure that Rec Room feels like it was built with your preferred input method (PC, console, or touch) in mind. Whether you play on a PC, console or touch screen, we’d like to minimize the “cognitive load” of controlling the game.
These changes should help make Rec Room feel more familiar and comfortable, just like putting on a warm jacket.
We appreciate all the comments you’ve sent us about our controls, and we’re looking forward to improving them. Our main goal with this blog is to share our experiences with controls so that others can learn from them.
- Let you know that we’re planning some major updates for our screens control app.
- If you’re a creator, to help you understand how to mark up the items in your inventory if dual-wielding matters to your experience, and
- Provide a chance for you all to give us feedback on further improvements in the coming weeks.
How it Works?
The new Default interface is intended to be the easiest possible experience for newcomers to Rec Room.
It features only one interaction method (the “drop” action) and no buttons whatsoever. You can easily learn how to play Rec Room without ever touching your mouse.
The new default control scheme has some cool new things.
Use right-click on the mouse or press L1 on a gamepad to aim (yippee!).
Switching between different tools quickly without dropping them first
A dedicated reload button (which wasn’t available until recently)
Shortcuts for keyboard and touch devices
You can share keyboard shortcuts for Camera and Maker Pen by going into Settings > General > Keyboard > Shortcuts > + Add shortcut
Rec Room is an extremely fun game, and we’re happy to announce some changes to the default control scheme for the first time ever. Please let us know what you thought!
