Want to improve your gaming experience by using one of the best VR headsets available?

With the VR market continuing to grow and the metaverse evolving from a confusing concept to virtual reality, it’s definitely a smart choice – but choosing the right VR headgear can be a virtual headache.

Premium VR Headsets

There are some premium VR headset options out there that will set you back hundreds of dollars.

But if you’re looking for something cheaper, there are also VR headset options available that cost less than $100 and don’t need a powerful computer to operate.

Luxury VR Headsets

There are plenty of less well-known VR headsets available for purchase, including some from companies like Pimax, ZEISS, and HP.

There are always numerous new VR headset launches on the horizon, but these are the best ones currently available. Plus, we’ve got a handy buying guide to get you started.

How to Choose the Best VR Headset

How to Choose the Best VR Headset?

You can learn more about VR headsets here. Here are some key points.

What Type of VR Headset Should I Buy?

You don’t need to spend your entire savings on a gaming PC just to experience virtual reality. Here are some different kinds of headsets you may want to look into.

PC VR Headset

If you already own an Xbox One S console, a PC VR headset from either Oculus or HTC is an obvious option. You’ll be able to play most of the best VR games available through Steam’s growing collection of VR titles.

PC VR headset offers the best display technology in the market today, with a high refresh rate and resolution for an immersive experience.

You will have to ensure that your computer can run VR games using Steam’s VR benchmark test before buying one.

Mobile VR Headset

If you’re looking for something to entertain your children, friends, colleagues, or even yourself, then a mobile VR device is probably the best option available right now. You can get them for as little as £25.

Download the relevant application, put the phone in its corresponding slot, and you’re ready to start using it.

Wireless VR Headset

It may be early days for wireless VR, but don’t dismiss it just yet.

It’s a bit like having two different experiences at once: the visual experience and the game library are slightly less impressive than that of PS VR, but you don’t require any additional hardware to start playing.

A good option if you’re new to PlayStation VR.

Console VR Headset

If you own a PS4, there are VR headset options available; however, if you own an XBox One, you won’t be able to use them.

You’ll find that the type of VR experience is limited by the power of the console; Sony’s PSVR is almost as impressive as a full-blooded PCVR, whereas Nintendo’s Labo kits are closer to mobile VR.

What Specs Should I Look Out For?

Display Resolution

A modern PCVR headset has a combined screen size of at least 2,500 by 1,400 pixels or 1,200 by 1,200 pixels per each of its eyes. Higher resolutions mean better images, but they also cost more.

Display Type

For now, don’t worry too much about this. However, if you’re planning on buying a VR headset soon, then you might want to consider an OLED display instead of a fast-switching LCD panel.

Refresh Rate

This determines how fast the display refreshes its image.

Essentially, a high refresh rate indicates that the moving images you see on the screen will be smoother, which may help you avoid feeling sick. The refresh rate ranges from 70-120Hz (70-100Hz for some models).

FOV: Field of View

How much of the virtual world you can see when peering into the lenses of your HMD?

Most VR headsets have a FOV of around 110 degrees, which is just slightly less than enough to make you experience the game as if you were actually there.

Oculus/Meta Quest 2

If we could go back, we’d probably spend less time developing games for the Gear VR and more time making sure our apps were optimized for the new headset.

Weight and Size

It’s also smaller and lighter than the previous version and uses a flexible band to keep itself securely fastened to your head.

Downsizes

Of course, it isn’t without faults

  • adjusting the distance between lenses (to match your eyes) is a fiddly process and, perhaps more contentiously
  • new users will need to sign in using a Facebook (Meta!!) account

To be blunt, this is entirely for the data-tracking benefits, so we urge new users to take a good look at the privacy settings.

If these things don’t convince you, then there’s nothing easier than saying the Quest 2 is the most comfortable VR headset around.

Key Specifications

  • Display resolution: 3,664 x 1,920
  • Display Type: Fast-switch LCD
  • Field of View: N/A
  • Supported software: Oculus Home

The Oculus Quest 2 has everything you need to get started with VR. It’s easy to set up and easy to learn. And if you want something that offers good value for money, the Quest 2 is definitely worth considering.
