Portal 2
When Portal was originally launched, it became an instant hit. Its core gameplay mechanics—solving puzzles and shooting connected portal guns at objects—still holds up even now.
Graphics
The graphics aren’t quite as good as they were back then, particularly because the game uses the same game engine and has the same resolution as 2004’s Half-life 2. There’s only so much that modern GPUs can do to improve them.
Portal Release
You either get everything or nothing at all. A journey into the Orange Box.
On December 8th, NVIDIA will release Portal 2 with RTX, a remastered version of the game with ray tracing effects and other improvements that NVIDIA claims will be available for free.
The update was first revealed back in September when NVIDIA unveiled its new RTX 4000 series graphics cards. Portal with RTX adds some pretty cool features including
- high-resolution physically-corrected texturing
- enhanced high-quality models
- real-time ray tracing
GPU Needs – Ray Tracing Compatible GPU
With its DirectX 9 graphics API, Portal was designed for older hardware. However, Portal RTX requires a newer GPU than the one used by Portal.
To achieve 60 frames per second at 1080p resolution, you need an RTX 3080 graphics card with DLSS 2 enabled. At 4K resolution, you’ll need an RTX 4080 graphics card with DL SS 3 enabled. And the CPU and RAM need to go up accordingly.
That being said, the games can be played on any ray tracing-compatible GPU, including the older RTX 2000 series, AMD’s RX 6000 series, and Intel’s newly released Arc A-series GPUs, among others.
GeForce GPU
However, the generally high requirements and the reliance on proprietary DLSS up scalers to achieve playable frame rates may mean that it’s difficult to run on anything but a modern GeForce GPU.
If you’re able to meet the system specifications, then the new lighting and texture features are a great reason to visit the weird world of Portal again without having to go back to old content.

Conclusion
At some point, the Nvidia RTX Remix moving platform used to remaster Valve’s Portal will also be made available for the general public, allowing them to easily update older DirectX 8 and DirectX 9 titles with improved graphics quality and modern lighting effects.
