Netflix has recently added the Sony FR7 to their list of approved cameras for 4K capture. Sony’s latest full-frame Cinema Line model is the first PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) camera to receive approval from the streaming giant.
The Sony FR7 is the first PTZ camera from Sony to be part of their Cinema line. It has inherited some of its design elements from the FX6 but has been redesigned to allow for remote operation of pan, tilting, and zooming.
Recently, this full-frame camera has drawn the attention of live production companies and broadcast stations and now joins 13 other Sony cameras in the Netflix approval list.

It’s no surprise to find the Sony FR7 among the list of approved camera models for use by Netflix.
Specifications
Indeed, this camera shares most of its specifications with the Sony FX6 (which is already on our list). These include
- A full-frame CMOS sensor
- 4K capture up to 120fps
- Built-in ND filters
- SLog3
- Fast Hybrid AF
- dual CFexpress A/SD slots
- same internal codecs
- even the ability to output 16-bit RAW over SDI.

Factors
However, according to Netflix, their camera review process goes far beyond just looking at the picture itself and includes other aspects, such as stability, reliability, and overall usability of their system.
Indeed, the FR 7 is the first PTZ (Pan/Tilt/Zoom) camera to receive Netflix‘s approval. Before, footage from PTZ cameras could be incorporated into programs at only about 10% of their total run time. Now, the FR7 can be adopted as the A Camera of the show.
Camera Production Guide
As with any camera, Netflix has published its own production guide for the new camera. It contains best practices and recommendations similar to those in the FX6 guide. There are no specific mentions to the PTZ feature.
