Microsoft has quietly released an update for Groove Music that replaces its legacy music player with a new one called “Windows Media Player.”

With the release of the latest version of Google’s mobile operating system, we will see some new and exciting changes appear over the coming weeks. Check out the features that come with Android 13 QPR2 Beta 1.

Windows 11’s Media Player

Windows 11’s media player is slowly being rolled out to Windows 10 Insiders who are signed up to the release preview channel.

Design System

It’ll be similar to the old Windows Media Player, but use the newer Windows UI 3.0 and Microsoft’s Fluent Design system. Even though Windows 10 doesn’t have round corners, this new media player will still look familiar.

Windows Insider Program

The new media player was first shown off at an event held by Microsoft in 2021 and it was then made available for Windows 11 users.

Microsoft remained silent about its plans for Windows 10 until today when it released an update to the Windows 10 preview channel that brings the operating system to older versions of Windows.

Alternatives

There are plenty of free media player options available for Windows, but Windows isn’t really late to the game when compared to its competitors. While we have better options like VLC and MPV (our personal favorites), the new Windows Media player is still a pretty good choice for new users.

Modes

It has been designed to be used in either dark or light mode, and it also respects the colors chosen by Windows 10. By default, it comes with a set of colors which are black and orange, or whites and oranges.

HDR Support

It has a fairly simple interface and it plays both audio and video media. Unlike Groove Music which focuses mainly on music, Media Player can play videos too.

With the Movies & TV app, there‘s also HDR (High Dynamic Range) playback, so if you have newer movies in this particular format, you can use that feature to watch them.

Version

The current version of WMP11 is 11.20.10.30 and Windows 10 Build 19041 is the minimum version.
