Steam Card: A Bridge to Digital Gaming

The Future of Game Consoles and Steam Integration

While there are no current game consoles that directly use Steam Cards, the gaming landscape is ever-evolving. Given the growth of cross-platform gaming and cloud-based services, it is not unlikely that future game consoles could integrate Steam more seamlessly. Keep an eye on the latest trends and developments in the industry, as new opportunities for using your Steam Card with a game console might arise.

What is a Steam Card?

A Steam Card is a kind of gift card that you can use to make purchases on the Steam online store.

You can redeem your card into your Steam Wallet and then use your wallet balance to buy anything from Steam. This includes downloadable content, games, other software, and even hardware. So, technically, you can use one for a Steam Deck purchase.

It comes in two forms which are digital and physical. You can buy physical cards in stores and gift them, or you can digitally purchase cards and send them digitally.

Denominations in which physical cards available are $20, $30, $50, and $100 while digital cards are available in $5, $10, $25, $50, and $100 denominations.

Steam and PC Gaming

First and foremost, the Steam Card is primarily associated with PC gaming. It allows you to purchase games, DLCs, and other content available on the Steam platform. While the Steam Card is not directly linked to any specific game console, it serves as a digital wallet for your Steam account, enhancing your PC gaming experience.

Steam Link App: Streaming on Consoles

Although not directly tied to a specific console, the Steam Link app allows you to stream your PC games to various devices, including some consoles. Here’s a table showcasing the compatibility of the Steam Link app with different consoles:

ConsoleSteam Link App Compatibility

Xbox Series X/SPartial
PlayStation 4No
PlayStation 5No
Nintendo SwitchNo

Keep in mind that the compatibility is subject to change, and these observations are based on the current scenario.

Valve Steam Machines: A Console Alternative

While no longer in production, the Valve Steam Machines was an attempt to combine console and PC gaming. These machines used SteamOS and allowed you to use your Steam Card to purchase and play games. Here are some benefits of Valve Steam Machines:

  • A bridge between console and PC gaming
  • Utilizing the vast library of Steam games
  • Steam Card integration

Where can you Buy Steam Gift Cards?

Physical steam cards are available at retail stores across the world like GameStop, 7-Eleven, CVS, Dollar General, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Walgreens, and more.

Additionally, they are also available online on the websites of retailers for in-store pickup and delivery.

We also found that if you want to buy the digital version, it’s available from some online retailers. Your best bet, however, is Steam itself, where you can select the Steam friends you want to gift and buy them directly, making it hassle-free.

How to Redeem a Steam Gift Card?

To redeem your gift card, you’ll need to launch the Steam client on your PC. Alternatively, you can visit the Steam website at steampowered.com.  Once open, follow the steps below to redeem your Steam Wallet code and add funds to your wallet:

  1. Go to https://store.steampowered.com/account/redeemwalletcode and sign in if you aren’t already. If you do not account then create a Steam account.
  1. Go to your account name in the upper right corner and go to your account details.
  1. In the Store and Purchase History section, select Add funds to your Steam Wallet.
  1. On the next page, look under ‘Your Steam Account’ in the bottom right sidebar and click ‘Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code’.
  1. Enter your Steam Wallet code, which is located on the back of your gift card, in the text field. Then click Next.
  1. If you haven’t already done so, you’ll need to provide a mailing address for Steam to calculate sales tax. Then click Next.

Your gift card balance will then be available in your wallet. You can always check your balance in the upper right corner next to your account name.

Additionally, you can also check your balance by going to your Steam account name and clicking View My Wallet. Your available balance is displayed on the right side of the screen.

How to Send a Steam Gift Card to a Friend?

You can purchase physical Steam gift cards from retailers such as those listed above. If you get a physical one, you’ll need to give the card directly to your friend (or send a picture of the code).

In addition, we found that if you use a retailer with an online storefront like Best Buy, you can even ship directly to your friend.

If your friend has a digital account, you can send it to that friend’s Steam account if they’re on your friend list. The best way to do this is through Steam itself.

How to Use Your Steam Wallet Funds?

After loading the funds into your wallet, you can use them in the Steam store. Follow these steps to purchase the game using a digital gift card:

  1. Find a Steam game you want to play, select it and click Add to Cart. You will automatically be taken to a page where you can select “Buy for yourself” or “Buy as a gift”. Select the options you want.
  1. Your payment method will be automatically set up in your Steam Wallet. Select Payment Information at the top of the screen to return to this page and make sure it’s selected from the dropdown list.
  1. On the Reviews and Purchases page, check the box to accept the Steam Subscriber Agreement and select Purchase at the bottom.

The game money will be deducted from your wallet and you can download your Steam game now. If the price exceeds the amount in your wallet, you can choose a second payment method such as a credit card or Paypal to make up the rest.

Adding a Steam Gift Card From a Different Currency

The Steam store is set to a specific currency based on your location. Therefore, if you received a Steam Gift Card/Wallet Code in a different currency, you may experience issues adding your balance.

Steam has changed the process for redeeming gift cards in different currencies to prevent gift card fraud. However, once the gift card goes through, it will be converted to the same currency that is set in the Steam store.

Otherwise, payment errors will occur. If you are trying to legally add your Steam balance using a gift card that does not match the Steam store currency, please contact Steam Support for instructions on how to add your balance.

Video Games

When looking into the world of video games, you may wonder about the compatibility between various game consoles and Steam cards.

SteamOS and Steam Machines

SteamOS is an operating system created by Valve Corporation, specifically designed for the Steam platform. It’s designed to run on Steam Machines, which are custom-built gaming computers that connect to your TV. Although not traditional game consoles, these devices allow you to access your favorite games using Steam cards.

Key Features of SteamOS

  • Supports Steam games
  • Optimized for TV and gaming controllers
  • Allows access to the extensive Steam library

Compatibility with Other Game Consoles

Tests and observations have shown that most mainstream game consoles, such as PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, do not natively support Steam cards. However, this doesn’t mean you’re out of options for utilizing your Steam cards on a game console.

The Alternative: Streaming Services

One possible solution is using streaming services like Steam Link or NVIDIA GeForce Now. These services allow you to stream games from your PC to your game console or other devices, letting you enjoy Steam games on your preferred console. Be aware that these options may require a strong internet connection and might not deliver the same experience as playing on a dedicated Steam Machine.
