In a recent interview, Fumito Ueda, creator of acclaimed video games like Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian, expressed hope that GenDesign, his studio, would be able to reveal their new game in the next year.
He thanked fans for their support but made no guarantees that the game would be released in 2023.
Speaking to Famitsu, Ueda shared a message (translated by Gematsu) about his aspirations for 2023. Although it was a vague assurance, fans of Ueda will have something to cling onto.
“All of genDesign is working hard to be able to finally announce something, so please give us your support,”
he said.

GenDesign Teasers
Though we have heard multiple discussions and teasers about the new game created by GenDesign, what it may be is still unknown. We can guess it will likely be of a similar style as Ueda’s last games and a January 2021 teaser with artwork from the new game further reinforces that assumption with its visual direction.

Epic Games Funding
Although we don’t know the name of the game, Epic Games Publishing has confirmed that they will be funding it. This stems from the 2020 agreement between Epic Games and GenDesign. It’s also possible that this game could be available on the Epic Games Store.
“gen DESIGN, Remedy, and Playdead are among the most innovative and talented studios in the industry, with strong visions for their next games,”
head of Epic Games Publishing Hector Sanchez said back when the announcement was made.
“They will have full creative control, while Epic will provide a solid foundation of project funding and services.”
Ueda left Sony’s Japan Studio as Team ICO’s leader during The Last Guardian’s famously lengthy development process, thereafter founding Gen Design and entering into a publishing pact with Fortnite developer Epic Games. We’ve seen some teases of his new project, featuring a translucent woman and a huge fist but not much else was revealed.
