The wireless DualSense Edge, Sony’s new PS5 controller, looks very familiar. It features the usual number of buttons and a comfortable ergonomic design with enough room to rest your hands on its boomerang-shaped plastic.

Given its extreme customizability, you can understand why the premium PS5 controller costs $200, which is nearly three times as much as the base price for the regular PS5 controller.

Though it may be a costly product for a premium item, don’t expect it to last as long as its predecessor.

Sony didn’t hide this fact; according to Ken Zhang, a PlayStation spokesperson in The Verge’s hands-on preview, the new DualSense controller will have a charge life that is “moderately shorter” than the PS5 controller, which can last up to 10 hours.

PS5 DualSense Edge

“We’ve included many more features within the same form factor and ergonomic design as the original DualSense controller,”

“Additionally, the longer USB braided cable is also great for competitive players who prefer playing with a wired connection to avoid wireless interference – this option preserves battery life.”

Zhang continued.

Zhang did not give a specific amount of how much-reduced battery life would be and Sony did not reply to Kotaku’s request for more information.

Nevertheless, Sony maintains that the actual attraction to the DualSense Edge should be its “ultra-customizable controls,” which have been extensively shown in trailers and product descriptions.

Features

Most of DualSense Edge’s capabilities can be rearranged or modified, including its

  • interchangeable joysticks (that must be purchased separately)
  • three interchangeable types of stick caps
  • two categories of back buttons that can be mapped
  • triggers that can be adjusted to different lengths.

On-Controller User Interface

The controller will feature an “on-controller user interface” on its bottom side that lets you adjust volume when connected to a headset and other helpful quality-of-life features.

What Would Be Included?

The standard $200 carrying case also comes with a few customizations. If you buy it, you get:

  • The controller
  • USB braided cable
  • Two regular stick tops
  • Two caps with high domes
  • Two low dome stick caps
  • A pair of half-dome-shaped buttons
  • A pair of lever-back buttons
  • Connector casing
  • User guide

Along with the carrying case, of course.

Although the battery issues were disappointing, The Verge senior editor Sean Hollister praised many of the customization aspects of the controller in his preview. He noted how simple it was to switch out a joystick or switch up the D-pad with face buttons as he wished.
