Sony explained that the PlayStation VR2 had been designed in tandem with the PS5 right from the start to create an ideal pairing and a single USB-C cable connection.

Porting Original PlayStation VR games

It won’t be simple to move PlayStation VR games over to the PS VR2, given that the rendering and controller tracking has changed with the newer headset.

Announced for a February 22, 2023 release date, the US$549 PlayStation VR2 headset has been developed alongside the PS5, meaning it won’t feel like a last-minute addition like its predecessor which uses multiple cables for connection.

Development of the PSVR2

Hideaki Nishino, Sony’s SVP of platform experience, stated that the company had begun developing the PSVR2 about 6 years ago to make the perfect combination of console and virtual reality when it started working on the PlayStation 5.

USB-C Port for PSVR2 Cable

This is why the PS5 comes with only one USB-C port at the front, which is intended for connecting a PlayStation VR2 cable.

When asked why not go wireless, Nishino commented that Sony is still researching technical aspects of it; but given the tremendous resolution of the PSVR2, as of now, nothing beats a physical cable connection.

Due to the complexity of connecting the initial PlayStation VR model to the Playstation 4, and the simultaneous development of both the Playstation 5 and the PSVR2 by different teams, it has been a blessing for the appearance and comfort of headgear, he said.

Ergonomics

Sony’s head of platform experience stated that they determined that the design of the PSVR2 was comfortable against people’s skin and had a perfect weight balance, so they left it unchanged even though it looks similar to its predecessor.

Apart from the single USB-C cable connection of the PlayStation VR2 headset with the PS5, and an assurance that enough units will be available at launch (unlike what happened with the PlayStation 5 stock), Mr. Nishino suggested a greater number of PSVR2 launch titles than anticipated.

I can’t talk about specifics yet, but there are still more unannounced titles that I’ve been able to experience the demo version of, in addition to those that have already been announced, so please look forward to it,” he said.

PlayStation VR2’s Compatibility

Regarding the PlayStation VR2’s compatibility with PS VR titles, porting may be challenging since its hardware for tracking controllers and image rendering systems are different from the earlier version, making it very hard to make older games advantage of the new version of the headset.
