The firm has promised four significant Color OS upgrades, not necessarily equivalent to Android version updates.

About a year ago, Oppo launched an updated policy that promised three major OS updates and four years of security patches for their Find X series flagship phones. Now, they’ve changed their policy for flagship devices.

To be more precise, the Chinese phone producer declared that it now provides four big Color OS updates and five years of security fixes for users from 2023, with the exception of specific leading models.

Oppo confirmed to Android Authority that this policy is only for future flagships releasing in 2021, so Find X5 Pro and Find N users won’t be part of the new promise.

Android OS or Color OS updates?

It’s peculiar that Oppo is specifically promising four “Color OS” updates instead of four major Android version upgrades. A year ago when the company declared a revised upgrade policy, it specified that it was offering three major “Android version” updates.

It is worth noting that companies like Xiaomi only upgrade their software overlay without changing the Android version underneath. This means that Oppo could offer four major Color OS updates without introducing a new Android version, as evidenced by the gradual releases of Color OS 12.1 and 11.1.

We’ve asked Oppo to confirm if their pledge covers updates for Color OS or Android version. We’ll add any further information we get from their response in this article.

We are glad to see the brand providing five years of security updates, which is matching Samsung and Google’s approach, and also following OnePlus after they introduced their revised policy this month. We expect that BBK would also make cheaper phones eligible for three OS updates and four years of security patches.
