Since the beginning of November, HMD has been releasing updates to Android 12 for the new Nokia 5.3. Some owners of the device have reported major issues with the update, and others have reported their phones becoming unusable after updating. HMD now has an official fix.

Nokia 5.3 Series Bug

After the release of the Android 12 upgrade for the Nokia 5.2 series, some users reported that their phones became unusable. In the worst cases, these devices become “brick” (they become a “brick”, in German brick).

What Happened?

When the phone was reset to factory settings, the screen remained black. Users were unable to turn the screen back on by themselves.

HMD Support

While those affected exchanged information about the problem online, HMD support was not yet prepared for it.

A reader of the technology journal came forward and claimed that Nokia was unwilling to help and demanded money for repairs.

Research Snipers had asked HMD and received the following answer:

“They are aware of the “challenges for a small number of our Nokia 5.3 phones after a recent software update,” it said.

The company is also “working intensively on a solution to solve this problem immediately”.

How Did Nokia Manage It?

The company has already halted the distribution of the updated version and is currently developing a fixed one. If you’ve recently performed a factory reset, then this might be why you’re seeing the error message.

We believe that this issue is caused by the configuration in the software updates. HMD has confirmed that this is an unexpected problem affecting only a few phones that have received the latest software update.

OTA Software Update

However, the error can no longer be fixed by an OTA (over-the-air) firmware upgrade, since the device cannot be turned on anymore. Users who experience this problem can now contact HMD for a replacement unit at no cost.

Users will presumably receive their smartphones back after they’ve updated to Android 11. However, the software team is still developing a way to release an upgrade to Android 12.
