Microsoft has acknowledged an issue with the Windows 11 Task Manager that can lead to the tool appearing incorrectly colored.

What You Need to Know

  • Microsoft has released an update for Windows 10 that fixes a problem where the task manager appears in the wrong color, making text unreadable.
  • The problem appears when you install the KB5020044 rollup that was released in Windows 10 Insider Builds on November 29, 2020.
  • Microsoft has released a temporary solution for the issue and is working on a long-term solution.

Why Did This Happen?

A few days ago, Microsoft added a new section to its Windows 11, version 22 H2 Known Problems and Notifications webpage about the task manager bug. While the bug prevents users from reading text, the task manager itself is working fine in the background.

After installing KB5020044 on your device, Task Manager may show certain UI components in unexpected colors. If this happens, Task Manager should function normally, but some parts of the User Interface (UI) may not be visible.

How Would You Be Affected?

You might be affected by this issue if you have

  • “Choose your mode” set to “Custom” in the Personalization colors section of Settings
  • If you’re using Dark or Light for your “Choose your mode” settings, you shouldn’t be affected by this problem.
