Microsoft is working on Windows 11, a version of its operating system that is tailored to a variety of devices ranging from desktops to foldable smartphones and tablets.
Microsoft is looking to create Windows 11 that will work on any type of device. The company based in Redmond desires its operating system to be accessible on all systems.
The operating system must be compatible with both desktop computers and normal laptops. Moreover, it needs to work on innovative folding laptops such as the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold.
Microsoft Folding Smartphones
In May 2021, Microsoft announced that it had stopped working on Windows 10X, an operating system designed with devices like tablets and foldable gadgets in mind.
When it came out, few people were familiar with these concepts. Many experts believe that 2023 will bring us folding smartphones and other unique devices. Additionally, the shape and variety of screens available on computers are set to be drastically altered.
Optimizing Windows 11 for Folding Devices
The Windows 11 user interface must be flexible to accommodate a range of devices and include advanced options.
Interface
The operating system will adjust its interface for compatibility with the PC’s shape, orientation (portrait or landscape), and total monitor count.
Exclusive Capabilities
Windows 11 will provide even better capabilities exclusively for foldable laptops, possibly even approximating the standard tablet user experience.
Moment 3 Update
Windows 11’s first major upgrade for foldable devices is expected to be released in May or June 2023 as part of the Moment 3 update, per Windows Latest.
In 2022, the upgrade of Windows Moment 2 will be released, featuring a tablet-oriented taskbar design.
Windows 23H2 will be released this fall, and should help pave the way for multi-screen and/or folding device adaptation by 2023. Next year is sure to be an important milestone in this development.
