Microsoft is reportedly planning to give its Bing search engine a boost by integrating artificial intelligence from OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot. This new feature will allow Bing to provide complete sentences in response to search queries, rather than simply listing links.

Microsoft and ChatGPT

Launching

The update is expected to launch by the end of March and is intended to give Microsoft a competitive edge over its main search rival, Google.

Investment

This move is also a way for Microsoft to see a return on its $1 billion investment in OpenAI made in 2019.

Integration

It is currently unknown how Bing will integrate OpenAI’s software, but it is expected to greatly enhance the Bing search experience.

Partnership

The partnership between Microsoft and OpenAI has gained significant attention in the tech industry, particularly after news emerged in October 2022 that Microsoft was considering making a second, multi-billion dollar investment in the artificial intelligence company.

Which Version Will Be Used?

Microsoft’s initial investment in OpenAI in 2019 included plans to integrate certain elements of GPT into Bing. Since then, the two companies have been working together to integrate GPT into Bing in order to improve the user experience. It is unclear whether the current version of GPT will be used in the service.

OpenAI has released multiple versions of GPT, including GPT-3 in 2021 and GPT-3.5 in the ChatGPT tool. The company has also announced that a more advanced version, GPT-4, is in development, but has not provided a release date.

OpenAI’s Cloud Services

Microsoft is currently utilizing OpenAI’s cloud services in tools that allow users to create text, code, and imagery using simple instructions and to train machine-learning models using internet data.

Several of Microsoft’s enterprise customer apps have been integrated with OpenAI’s technologies, and the company also makes GPT-3 and Dall-E 2 available to enterprise customers as part of its Azure server and compute-power rental business.

Copilot

In June 2022, Microsoft unveiled Copilot, a subscription service that uses OpenAI’s tools to help software engineers automatically generate code.

How Are They Going To Safely Use It?

The next phase of the partnership between OpenAI and Microsoft appears to involve integration with Bing, which raises concerns as these models can sometimes produce offensive or inaccurate content.

Despite its own AI advancements, even Google has hesitated to introduce a chatbot like ChatGPT. However, Microsoft has not yet revealed how it plans to prevent potential mistakes or problems with objectionable content, such as those that occurred with its Tay chatbot in 2016.

Spokespeople for Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this article.

OpenAI to Charge for ChatGPT

It is worth noting that OpenAI intends to charge for ChatGPT in the future, similar to the fees it charges programmers who use GPT to create text-generating bots. This means that Bing could potentially become one of the only free access points to GPT.
