New sets of patch updates for the Plan 9 (Plan 9) resource-sharing protocols inside the Linux kernel can improve transfer speeds by up to ten times.

Remote File-System Protocol

If everything is fine with these patches, the nine-pack (9p) remote file-sharing protocol implementation within the Linux operating systems stands to see much better overall performance. The nine-pack code on Linux has remained important for virtfs and other reasons around sharing files with guests.

What Do They Do?

The proposed patches

  • Adjust the maximum message length to account for the header length.
  • Expand the writeback cache to all levels
  • Consolidating multiple file operations into one operation
  • If you want to disable XATTR support for certain filesystems, you can use the -o noatime mount parameter.
  • Other changes too, including some 9p code fixes.

Our experts’ test and review all the latest technology, so make sure to check that out.

Eric Van Hensbergen who worked on these Linux 9p performance optimization patches commented on the patch series,

Altogether, these show roughly 10x speed increases on simple file transfers. Future patch sets will improve cache consistency and directory caching…Tested against qemu, cpu, and diod with fsx, dbench, and some simple benchmarks.

These new features could be included in a future Linux kernel version if they’re deemed useful enough by the community.
