With the introduction of the MacStudio and StudioDisplay in Apple’s product line, and with mixed signals of a larger Apple silicone iMac on its product roadmap, will there ever be an iMac Pro?

‌iMac‌ Pro

Five years ago this past Thursday, Apple launched its new iMac Pro. At the time, it was described as “the most powerful computer ever made.” Three months later, Apple discontinued the iMac Pro.

At that point, the machine had been replaced by the 2019 Mac Pro which was a major upgrade from the previous generation, and the first Apple Silicone Macs were released in April 2021.

Discontinuing

Apple has discontinued its Intel-powered 27-inches, leaving the junior iMac with an entry-level processor as the only all-screen option in Apple’s lineup.

iMac with a 27-Inch Mini-Led Display

Display Supply Chain Consultant Ross Young says that Apple is planning to release a new iMac with a 27-inch Mini LED display with ProMotion by 2021. However, these rumors have died down since the introduction of the Mac Studio and Studio Display earlier this year.

Modularity

When Apple announced its new MacBooks and iMacs at WWDC 2016, they touted their modularity and collective positioning between the MacBook and the Mac Pro. So, the fact that the Mac Studio is located in Apple’s lineup has raised suspicions that there is no room for a “pro” version of the iMac anymore.

Reports indicated that Apple was not expecting to bring out a new ‌iMac‌ Pro or an ‌iMac‌ with a larger display in the near future.

Nonetheless, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo thinks that a brand new ‌iMac‌ Pro model will be released in 2023 together with the new ‌Mac Pro‌ – an idea supported by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg who reported that Apple is working on a high-end iMac earlier this year.

I also still believe that Apple is working on a larger-screened iMac aimed at the professional market. I’d imagine this will use a variation of the M3 chip, likely an M3 Pro and M3 Max. That would match the chips inside of the MacBook Pro. I don’t think the combination of a Mac Studio or Mac mini plus an Apple Studio Display cuts it for many pro users who want more screen real estate.

Mini-LED Zones

Apart from a Young since which revealed the ‌iMac‌ Pro will have fewer mini-LED zones than the iPad Pro or MacBook Pro, not much information is available about what it could come with.

It appears that the iMac Pro is likely to feature a bigger 27-inch mini-LED display with ProMotion, M3 Pro, and ‌M3‌ Max chip options, plus numerous ports taken from the MacBook Pro judging by what we currently know.

Despite the emergence of the ‌Mac Studio‌ and Studio Display, a new high-end ‌iMac‌ is likely to be released in the coming year, as reported by Young, Kuo, and Gurman. This still implies that the prospects of a new ‌iMac‌ Pro remain strong.
