The Information reported that Apple had scheduled a major upgrade to the graphics capabilities of the iPhone 14 Pro, but they had to abandon such plans close to completion due to some “unprecedented” issues being detected.

Graphics Processor

According to The Information’s paywalled article, Apple engineers were alleged “too ambitious” when they included features such as ray tracing into the graphics processor designed for the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌, a technique to bring more realism to video games.

The ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ prototype was found to draw more power than anticipated, negatively affecting its battery life and heat management.

A15 Bionic Chip

Allegedly, according to insider sources speaking to The Information, Apple discovered the GPU flaw in the ‌iPhone14 Pro‌ late in its development process, meaning that they had to make quick adjustments and resort back to the A15 Bionic chip for many aspects of the iPhone 13 lineup.

Chip Design History

An unprecedented event during the chip design process Apple is allegedly why the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ only made slight improvements in graphics performance, unlike those seen in previous iPhone models.

Due to the error, Apple had to rearrange its graphics processor team and fire some leaders involved in the project; among them were key individuals that helped Apple become a chip design leader.

The report highlights how Apple’s chip design team was adversely affected by the loss of talent in the past few years, with dozens of core members leaving to work at other silicon design companies as well as from internal disputes and legal battles with chip startups.
