The Four Kinds of Videos You Can Watch on Your VR Headset

There are four types of videos you can view in VR:1) Videos you download yourself (e.g., YouTube);

Regular 2D video

These are the normal video clips you see on YouTube, Vimeo, or DVD/Blu-Ray discs.

3D video

You’ve seen 3-D movies at the movie theaters, and you can buy them on Blu-ray, as well. If you want to watch them in VR, then you can rip them from Blu-ray into a “left/right” or “top/bottom” video file, which is compatible with most VR headsets.

You’ll usually be able to choose between Full SBS, where each video has both eyes in full resolution, or Subsampled SBS, where each movie has one of each person’s eyes in subsampled resolution. Full SBS movies are noticeably better quality, but use more hard disk space and require more processing power to play.

180 or 360-Degree Video

These kinds of videos are relatively new, but you can watch them online or download them from other sites. You can move the video around on your computer screen by dragging it with the mouse, but if you’re playing one on an Oculus Rift or Vive, you can turn around and view things from different angles. It’s really fun!

Full VR video

This format uses three-dimensional (3D) and 180 or 360-degree video for entirely immersive, 3D, headset-free viewing experiences. You can watch a few for free on Youtube and buy some video demos from companies like Video Blocks. Although, if we’re being honest, most of the VR videos available today are, well, pornography.

There aren’t nearly the number of 360 and VR videos available as there are for 2D and 3D films, but as VR continues its rise, so too will the number of 360 and Vr videos.

How Do You Get Movies or Videos Onto the Oculus Go Headset?

If you want to watch a video on the Oculus Go headset, you can either download them directly to the device itself (which requires a data connection) or stream them through the Oculus app on your phone. You’ll also need to make sure you’ve got enough storage space on your phone to store the files.

If you’re using Safari, you can open up the browser and go to Settings > Privacy > Clear History and Website Data.

Then, under Downloads, click on Empty Cache and Hard Drive. Finally, if you’re viewing a video, you can press Command + Shift + K (or Control + Option + K) to close out the page and then reopen it again.

If you want to stream the video files to your Oculus Go, download them to your computer first and then copy them to the device via a USB cable. Otherwise, if you just want to watch the videos without streaming them, skip ahead to step 3.

Important Note: If streaming directly from a website, be sure to watch the video until it begins playing, and then select the “HD” option and change it to the highest quality available.

Most websites default to a low-quality setting but they have high-quality settings if you manually choose them.

How to Watch Videos on the Oculus Go, Daydream View, or Gear VR?

You can always stream video from the web, download movies and TV shows from the iTunes or Google Play stores, or any other place where you’ve purchased content. However, if you want to download content to play offline, you’ll need to use another option, like Skybox VR.

Note: Got a plex media player? You can just install the plex app from the store from the corresponding links (gear vr, daydream, oculus go). That’s pretty much all there is to it. If you don’t wanna mix your vr videos into your plex media player, or you just wanna play contents that you’ve downloaded directly onto the headset itself, your best bet would be to use sky box vr player instead.
