Are you wondering how you can use Trinus VR with Steam VR?

Let’s find out.

How to Use Trinus VR with Steam VR?

To get started, first download and install Trinus. Then, when you’re ready, launch Trinus and choose “SteamVR” from the menu. Trinus will then install the SteamVR driver and begin configuring the room.

Some SteamVR games may not be compatible with non-NoloVR or move controllers.

Troubleshooting Trinus VR

For certain configurations, there may be some common issues. Here are some solutions.

Connectivity

  • Make sure your phone and computer are connected to the same Wi-Fi or USB tethering is enabled.
  • If you’re using USB tethering, you may need to update your computer’s USB drivers from your device’s maker. Otherwise, the connection could fail or be slower.
  • Set the IP addresses manually in the Trinus PC server, matching the Trinus android client
  • If you’re using a USB tether, the computer will automatically connect to the internet through your mobile device unless you change the Windows networking settings.
  • If using a mobile hotspot, you may also need to set the IP address manually (give the network discovery process a few seconds before trying that). This can be changed in the Network tab>Set IP textbox.

Bad/No Image

  • For non-VR games, change the Capture Mode (Game, General, Compatible). Also, try running the game windowed
  • If an image is not completely displayed, disable display scaling in the Windows Compatibility tab, or if necessary, enable/disable the Dpi Fix checkbox in the Trinus Video tab.
  • Make sure that the correct 3-D mode is selected, either Fake 3-D for non-VR games running at a 4:3 ratio or 8:9 ratio, or Disabled for non-VR games side by side (16:9 double screen)
  • If the frame freezes during gameplay, switch between the game and stream windows.

Visual Discomfort

  • To ensure a comfortable viewing angle, adjust the IPD setting so that it matches the distance between your eyes.
  • Set up a lens/headcount settings in Trinus PC that fits your headset. You can also turn off Lens Correction.
  • If bad head tracking causes discomfort, try calibrating your phone’s sensors before using them. You may be able to get better results by switching from one type of camera to another.

BSOD

  • Some people have reported a Windows crash after connecting their devices via USB. Usually, this problem can be fixed by turning off the “Fast Startup” feature in Windows.

Phone Settings

There are some settings in the TrinusVR Android client that can help solve certain problems or enhance the VR experience.

  • Video Input: Main input as set on the TrinUS VR PC server. Default if fine unless you get an issue where the video stream isn’t working properly.
  • Sensor Jitter Filter: To reduce jitter caused from some phones’ sensors
  • Orientation Drift Filter: You might be able to reduce orientation drift by using an Orientation Drift Filter.
  • Sensor mode: There are different ways to handle sensor readings. If you want to switch off the default settings, go ahead.
  • Flip View Vertically: Enable view flip when rotating the phone
  • VR Menus: Trinus itself will be in VR mode, to control with a headset on. Clear app data if you can’t restore to non-VR Menus
  • Internet Check: If you’re connected via a tethered internet connection, Trinus will warn you to avoid mobile charges. You can turn off these notifications by selecting “No.”
  • Fake Roll: When Fake Roll is turned on for non-VR games, choose which way you want to move by pressing the left stick up/down.
  • Lens Correction: Lens distortion corrects images so they look similar to the ones taken by your camera. If you disable it, you may get better performance but at the cost of image clarity.
  • Performance level: Set priority between quality and speed
  • You can use the Trinus app to manually turn on the wifi hotspot when needed. However, if you’re using an older device, you may need to wait for the next firmware update before you can use the hotspot feature.

Recommendations

To get the most out of your images, you’ll want to adjust the quality setting to match your computer’s capabilities. Here are some suggested adjustments:

  • Reduce the game resolution by changing its settings or reducing the file sizes of the images used for the game.
  • If you want to connect your Android phone via USB tethering, you need to install an app called “USB Tether” from Google Play Store. Some mobile carriers may block USB tethering for security reasons.
  • Routers provided by Internet service providers aren’t usually very high performing for local network connections, so if you’re looking for something better than an Ethernet cable, consider buying a USB adapter or a wireless access point.
  • Use Fake3D mode (with game resolution ratio at 4:3 or 8:9, not landscape 16:9)
  • You should always test the different capture settings before using them for recording. Game mode usually works best, but the general mode may need to be set to “Window” so that it captures the entire screen.
  • You can enable fast scaling (lower image quality) if you want to save some time.
  • On the left-hand side, check the rates shown at the top right corner (capture/deliver/sensor data rates) for each device. Low capture rates mean poor PC performance. Low delivery rates mean slow network speeds.
  • If using Gear VR, you’ll need an application that disables the Oculus service (effectivly turning it into a Google Cardboard headset). You can use this application, for example. Alternatively, you can try to place the phone in without plugging the USB port.
