Step 1: Assemble Your Cardboard Headset
To get started using your cardboard headset, you first must set it up. This involves following five easy steps.
- When you first put on your cardboard headsets, pull them out of the box.
- Lift up on the top tab of the headset to release the velcro.
- After opening the sides, rotate the flap over to its backside.
- To attach the Velcro strips together, press them together firmly.
- Take off the protective blue coverings.
Once you’ve prepared your Apple or Android device, it’s time to assemble the headset itself.
Step 2: Toggle Orientation Lock To Off
To ensure that a learner’s device can rotate into landscape mode, the VR experience must be set up to display horizontally.
iPhone Users
For iPhone users with iOS 14 and newer, swipe down from the upper right corner of your screen and make sure this button is off.
Android
To disable auto rotation for Android users, go to Settings > Accessibility > Auto-rotating screen, and uncheck the box next to “Rotated”.
Step 3: Ensure Volume Is Turned On
Before launching your VR experience, check if your device has its sound on. You might hear instructions and explanations during the course via voiceover, so you’ll want to turn up your speakers.
iPhone Users
For iPhone learners, the audio controls are located on the left side of their devices. They should turn the switch up so that there is no orange tag showing and then click the top button to adjust the sound.
Android
For Android devices, the audio control buttons are located at the top of the screen. Students should ensure the sound is set to their preferred level by pressing the top icon to increase the sound.
Step 4: Launch The Virtual Reality Experience
Next, launch the VR experience from your web page on your phone. You’ll access this by assigning a unique URL for each activity.
- For iPhone users, Safari is the preferred browser.
- For Android users, Chrome is the preferred browser.
Step 5: Enable Motion Control
Once the course launches, learners will be taken directly to the “Enable Movement Controls” screen where they can use their devices’ built-in movement controls to move through the course.
iPhone Users
For iPhone users with Android 9 and newer, select “Allow”. If you accidentally select “Deny”, reload the browser and select “Allow” again. A pop-up message will appear. Select “Allow” to proceed.
For iPhone owners with iOS 12 or older (iOS 11), you must go into settings > Safari > Motion & Orientation Access > Relaunch Interaction.
Android
For Android devices, tap “Allow” to proceed. If you accidentally tap “Deny”, refresh your browser and tap “Allow”. This will bring up an alert dialog box. Tap “OK” to allow access.
Step 6: Enable Virtual Reality Mode
To enable VR capabilities, click the VR icon at the bottom right corner of the screen. When VR mode is enabled, the screen looks like this:
NOTE: If you cannot see the VR icon, you may need to click on the “View Full Screen” option in your browser.
Step 7: Place Your Phone Into The Headset
Once you’ve completed the steps outlined above, you can put your phone inside the cardboard VR headset with its screen turned towards the lens. Then close the front lid and attach the velcro strap on top.
Step 8: Make Selections In Virtual Reality Mode
With a VR headset, there are two ways to interact: gaze interaction and capacitative touch.
iPhone Users
On an iPhone, the button on the left of your cardboard headset acts like your touchpad, allowing you to select items using your fingers.
With an iPhone, users can also use gaze interaction to select objects or buttons. Simply align the small circle on your phone’s display onto the desired item, then wait for the cursor to appear.
Android
To select an item on your phone, look at the center of your display where a small circle appears.
To select an item, place the cursor over it and hold down the left mouse button until the cursor shrinks into a small circle. Then release the left mouse button.
