Tips & Tricks for New Quest 2

Oculus Quest 2 is an excellent headset for first-time VR experiences, and it brings lots of new users into VR. Here are nine things worth doing right away to improve your experience.

Turn on Passthrough Background & Passthrough Shortcut

When using the Quest 2 camera, you will see Passthrough mode when you first set up the device.

You can put on your headphones first and then easily see which controller is yours so you don’t have to feel around for it. It’s also much nicer than having to put on your headphones while your controller is hanging from its strap.

You can always return to your home location by pressing the Home button. If you’ve wandered away from the play area, press the Home button to get back to the middle.

If you want to be able to look out from inside your headset without having to take it off, you don’t need to worry about removing it.

When Passthrough Short is enabled, you can double tap on your headset to instantly switch between the passthrough view and the regular view. To turn off the passthrough view, simply press and hold the button until the screen turns black.

Turn on Passthrough Background

  1. On your headset, press the Oculus buttons on your right controller to open the Quest menus. Then click on the clock icon at the bottom left to open Quick Settings.
  2. Clicking the eye button in Quick Settings opens up an option for viewing notifications.

Instead of having a virtual home, you’ll just be able to view the rooms around you until you jump in an app.

Turn on Passthrough Shortcut

  1. On your headset, press the Oculus buttons on your right-hand controllers to open the Quest menus. Then click on the clock at the lower left corner to access Quick Settings.
  2. To access quick settings, go to the gear icon at the top right corner of your screen.
  3. Select Guardian from the left side of the Settings section.
  4. Scroll down until you see “Passthrough Shortcuts” and turn the switch.

If you’re not able to use your phone or tablet to access the internet, double-tap the screen of your headset with your hands or controller to instantly switch between the two worlds. Tap again to return to VR mode.

Use Voice Commands to Navigate Quest 2 & Launch Apps

With voice commands on Quest 2, you can quickly access the apps menu and launch games by simply asking your device to “Launch Beat Saber.”

You don’t need to dig through the Settings menus to change them; instead, you can simply ask “Show me Guardian settings.” Or, if you want to play a different type of video game, you can just say “Search for The Walking Dead.”

Turn on Voice Commands

  1. On your headset, press the Oculus buttons on your right controller to open the Quest menu. From there, click on the clock icon at the bottom-right corner to open Quick Settings.
  2. Click the triangle next to “Voice commands” in Quick Settings.

This will launch the voice commands and teach you what you’re able to say.

Enable Voice Commands Controller Shortcut

  1. On your headset, press the Oculus button on your Right Controllers to open the Quest Menu. Then click on the time at the bottom-right corner to access Quick Settings.
  2. From the quick setting menu, clicking the “three horizontal lines” icon will take you to the “setting” page.
  3. Select “Settings” from the menu bar
  4. Select Voice Commands from the Devices menu.
  5. If you want to use voice commands, turn on Controller Shortcuts (optional)
  6. We also recommend turning off Store Voice Commands.

Now you can double-tap the Oculus button to enable voice commands.

Enable Voice Commands Key-word Shortcut

  1. On your headset, press the Oculus buttons on your right controller to open the Quest menu. Then click on the clock at the lower-right corner to access Quick Settings.
  2. Clicking the gear button in the quick settings menu opens up the settings screen.
  3. Click on Experimental Features
  4. Enable “Hey Facebook” in Experimental Features

You can now use “Hey Facebook” to activate voice commands. It’s especially helpful if you’re using touch controls without controllers because it’s quicker than navigating through menu options.

Record or Cast Your VR Gameplay on Quest 2

With something as cool and useful as virtual reality (VR), it’d be natural to share the experience. Fortunately, Quest 2 has many ways for you to share your experiences.

There are several ways to capture footage from your gameplay. You can record videos of your gameplay, take screenshots, broadcast live streams, or even stream to audiences online. Here’re some tips for each method.

  1. On your headset, press the Oculus (right) trigger to open the Quest menu.
  2. You can now select from three options when recording video, taking photos, and casting.

You can even use voice commands to record videos, take screenshots, or send messages during gameplay.

Casting

Cast lets you stream video from your phone to your PC, TV, or another device.

You can cast to smartphones using the Oculus mobile apps for iOS and Android, or to any compatible device on your network via Chromecast. Or, you can cast to computers at Oculus.com/cast.

Storage

You can store recorded video and captured images on the headset using the pre-installed Files application.

You can also enable syncing so that you can access videos and photos stored on your headset via the Oculus mobile application.

You can use Quest 2 to watch videos and take screenshots from any device connected to your TV.
