You should also unplug the Oculus Rift controllers if they’re plugged into the computer. And you can always remove their batteries to shut them down.

It is safe to leave an Xbox One S in sleep mode for days or months at a time without draining its battery, and it should automatically turn itself back on when you remove it from your console.

Turning off an Oculus Rift isn’t difficult at all. You turn it off by pressing the power button.

After removing the headset from your head for a few seconds, it automatically enters sleep mode, and in that state, it consumes very little power.

Once you remove the headset, the controller will enter sleep mode, with its indicator light changing from solid to a gentle pulse.

How to Turn Off Oculus Quest 2 Properly?

It doesn’t take the hardest job in the universe to switch off your Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset. But, if you don’t succeed at doing so, your VR headset goes into sleep mode and won’t shut down.

If you’re not careful, your VR headset could consume too much electricity and stop working because you didn’t notice it was running out of battery.

Here are the instructions for turning off the Oculus Quest 2.

1. Locate the Power Button

If you’re a new user of the Oculus Rift, finding out where the power button is might be a challenge. But why would we want to use a VR headset when I don’t even know how to turn it off?

Put the headset on. On the left side of the headset, just below the strap, there is a small red light. That is the indicator for the battery level. When the battery is low, the light turns orange. You should charge the battery before every session.

2. Press that Power Button

Once you’ve located the volume control, hold down the button for about three seconds until you hear a beeping sound. Then release the button and wait for the menu to appear.

Don’t press and release immediately; otherwise, your Oculus Go will go into sleep/hibernation.

3. Go to Shut Down Menu

A pop-up window will appear in the middle of your AR screen. It’s named “Shut down menu”. Selecting the option “Shut down menu” will give you 3 choices.

You have three choices: Restart, Power off (turns off), and Cancel. Choose Power off from the list.

4. Complete the Shutdown Process

When you select the “off” option from the menu, the notification message “Shutting down…” will appear immediately, and it will remain on display for four to five minutes.

Once you’ve done that, all you will see is a pitch-black screen. That necessarily implies that you have successfully shut off the Oculus Quest 2 VR headset.

This is by far one of the easiest methods available for you. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, it is. However, we’re afraid that’s not the case.

There may be some obstacles when turning off the headset, but we’ve already faced them.

Oculus Quest 2 Not Turning Off Correctly

If you’ve been wearing an Oculus Rift CV1 headset for a long period of time and haven’t had the idea of switching it off until now, there’s a chance that your headset won’t turn off properly.

One possible cause for this problem is when you put the headset into “Suspend” mode by pressing the “On/Off” button. It may not be a big deal until your Quest2 has stopped responding or has crashed.

If it happens, there are ways to fix it. Pressing and keeping the button down for a few minutes is one way to start.

If that doesn’t solve the problem, then we need to look at the details of the issue. Read carefully and take note of the instructions.

Shut down the Headset Using Voice Command

One cool thing the Oculus Quest 2 has is the ability to use its built-in microphone to control the headset by simply saying “Hey, Oculus” into your computer’s mic.

For this, you need to turn on the settings. You don’t know how to do this?

  4. Select Continue Set Up.
  5. Click “Enable” from the next dialog.
  6. Now, press the Oculus button twice to start using voice commands.
  7. After activating the voice control, simply double-tapping the Oculus button/Home button and saying “Shut down” will shut off your VR headset immediately.

Check if your Quest 2 is in Sleep Mode

We’ve already discussed the common mistake people tend to commit when putting their Quest 2 VR headsets into sleep/off state.

If you want to use Quest2 without waking up every few minutes, just keep pressing the “on” button until you reach sleep mode. Once there, don’t touch anything except the “off” button. When you turn off the device, it will automatically go back into sleep mode.

If you have the question, “Why would it switch off immediately after pressing the ‘on’ key?” wait for a few seconds before turning it on again. The switching-off screen will appear shortly.

Power off your Quest 2 in the Right Manner

This is the most important step. We’ve already talked about turning it off, but for your own good, let us explain it again.

Here are the steps for shutting down your quest 2.

  1. To turn off the headset, press and keep pressing the power button until you hear a beep. It’s located on the right side of your headset.
  2. Hold down the power button for at least 10 seconds before turning off your computer.
  3. Choose the power off button from the available options.
  4. Follow these steps carefully, and your headphones shouldn’t turn themselves back on when they’re moved a little or when you don’t wear them for a few minutes.
  5. If you want to use an Oculus Quest 2 without connecting to Wi-Fi, check out our guide here.

Disable Auto Wake Headset

If you’re a frequent flyer like me, you might be worried about Oculus’s auto-waking functionality. It turns off the display when you put the device down but then automatically wakes up again after a few seconds. However, there’s an easy way to turn it off.

Here’s how you turn off auto-wake:

  1. Open the headset settings.
  2. From the settings menu, select the desired option.
  3. Select the power button at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Turn off the auto wake headset.

You’re ready! Now, suddenly moving shouldn’t awaken the Quest 2 VR, and the power drain issue should stop itself.

Remove Charging Cable Before Turning off

When we first got our Quest2, we would always unplug the charging cable whenever we weren’t using it. But then we realized that the Quest2 wouldn’t shut down properly if the charging cable were plugged into the back of the device.

Plugging out the charging cord when you turn off the headset is one way to ensure that the headset is completely powered down. However, if you want to be extra careful, you could unplug the charging cord first before shutting down the headset.

If your Oculus Rift doesn’t shut down properly, here are some things you can do to fix it.

Conclusion

If you follow these steps correctly, your Oculus Rift VR headset will turn off when you’re done playing. And the best part of it is you can do it using the skills you already have!
