How to Stream VR on Discord – Easy Guide, Tips, FAQs & More

Whenever you’re hanging out with friends on a Discord call, it can be very fun to stream whatever game you’re playing to them. 

However, if it’s a VR game that you’re playing, it can be confusing to get it to stream. 

This post tackles some problems you may face while trying to stream VR on Discord and also, gives easy instructions on how to stream properly.

How to Stream on Discord with Steam VR?

The first and easiest way that you can stream on Discord is with the help of Steam VR.  

Steam VR is Steam’s native VR software and it works with pretty much all games that are available on Steam. Furthermore, Steam is also highly compatible with Discord so you’ll have little to no issues when trying to stream games that run with Steam VR. 

Here how you do it: 

Step 1: Go to the Steam store and search for Steam VR. Download it and install it. 

Step 2: Go to your Steam library and launch Steam VR. 

Step 3: Within Steam VR, you can choose to launch any of the VR titles that you own through Steam. 

Choose the VR game that you’d like to play and stream to your friends and launch it. 

Step 4: Launch your Discord application. 

Step 5: Go to the Discord server that you’d like to broadcast in and join an appropriate voice channel. 

Step 6: The option to stream your VR game will be in the bottom-right as shown by the monitor icon below: 

Step 7: Once you click the icon, you’ll be provided with options to set the frame rate as well as the resolution. Make sure that you select the appropriate options that your internet and PC can support. 

Step 8: Once you’re satisfied with the settings, go ahead and click “Go Live” to stream VR gameplay to your friends and peers in the voice channel. 

How to Stream on Discord with the Oculus Quest 2?

So, we covered how you can stream on Discord if you’re playing VR games on Steam. 

However, this method will not work with games that you play outside of Steam on the Oculus platform. 

If you have an Oculus Quest 2, there are a couple of ways to stream on Discord. 

The first is to cast it on a browser of your choice and stream that. The second is to use Virtual Desktop. We’ll cover how to use Virtual Desktop later but for now, let’s look at how you can stream on Discord with the help of a browser. 

Follow these steps: 

Step 1: First of all, make sure that your Oculus Quest 2 and your PC are on the same wifi network. 

Step 2: Open your browser and go to log into the Oculus Casting Portal. Please note that you should use either Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge to cast. 

Step 3: Press the Oculus button on your Oculus Touch controller to open the menu. 

Step 4: On the top, you will see four options. Choose the “Cast” option. 

Step 5: It will ask you which system you want to cast to. Since your PC is on the same wifi network, you should be able to see it. Go ahead and select it. 

Step 6: Follow the instructions and in the end, you should be casting to your browser. To confirm this, you can look to the top-right of your screen and you should see a red dot. This confirms that your VR gameplay is being casted to your browser. 

Step 7: Launch the Discord application. 

Step 8: Go to the server you want to stream in and join the voice channel that you’d like to stream in. 

Step 9: Once you join the voice channel, you should be able to see the option to “Share Your Screen” near the bottom right as shown below: 

Step 10: Once you choose the icon, you’ll be asked which window you would like to stream. Choose your browser window and you’ll be good to go. 

How to Stream on Discord with Virtual Desktop?

To stream with Virtual Desktop, you’ll first have to buy the application. While it may seem like it’s not worth it to buy an application to stream your VR gameplay, it’s quite useful if you’re a content creator. 

The app has tons of functionality and also allows you to record VR gameplay if you intend to use the footage to make videos, etc. 

To stream VR gameplay on Discord with Virtual Desktop, follow these steps: 

Step 1: Install Virtual Desktop on your Oculus Quest 2.

Step 2: Install Virtual Desktop on your PC. 

Step 3: Ensure that your Oculus Quest 2 and your PC are on the same wifi network. 

Step 4: To pair your Oculus Quest 2 and your PC, open the Virtual Desktop on your PC and provide your Oculus username. 

Step 5: If you set it up correctly, you should be able to see your desktop window through your Oculus Quest 2 headset. 

Step 6: You can open the Virtual Desktop window by pressing the Oculus button on your headset.

Step 7: Disable Noise Cancellation and ensure that the Microphone Passthrough option is enabled with Virtual Desktop settings. 

Step 8: Select the streaming quality according to what your PC and your internet can handle. If you do more than what your PC can handle, it will result in a laggy stream and sub-optimal gameplay. 

Step 9: Set the VR Bitrate to default.

Step 10: In your Discord Voice and Video settings, set the Input device as the virtual microphone. The output device should be set to Default. 

Step 11: Join the server and the voice channel that you’d like to stream in within Discord.

Step 9: After joining the voice channel, you’ll see the option to “Share Your Screen” near the bottom right as shown below: 

Step 10: Once you choose the icon, you’ll be asked which window you would like to stream. Choose the Virtual Desktop window, provide the appropriate settings for the stream and you’ll be good to go. 

Wrapping Things Up… 

As you can see, there is a multitude of ways through which you can stream on Discord. 

You might face some technical issues with some VR titles, but it only takes some tinkering with settings and using different capture methods to get it to work. 

If specific window capture does not work within Discord, you can also try streaming your entire screen. This usually works, but the cost will be that your friends will be able to see everything on your PC rather than the specific VR game window.
