What Is Virtual Reality (VR) in Garry’s Mod?

Virtual Reality (VR) is an immersive gaming experience where you connect a VR headset and controller to your computer allowing you to control certain things within the games.

There has been a recent addition to the Garry’s Mod community which makes the popular sandbox video games compatible with almost all the major VR headsets and systems. It’s called “VR Mod” and it’s available on Steam Workshop.

How Do We Download This Mod?

If you’ve decided to give the GModserver a go, you can download it directly from Steam Workshop here. Once you’ve “subbed” to the mods on Steam, you’re going to need to read through the Quick Start Guide.

How to Play Half-life 1 and Half-life 2 in VR?

Half-Life: Episode Three may not quite be Half-Life 3, but it may just as well be for anyone owning a VR headset.

It’s Half-Life 2.0 to some, Half-life 1.5 to other people who point out that it’s a prequel to Half-Life 2, but everyone can probably agree that it’s almost certainly going to be a fully-fledged Half-Life VR game.

But the prospect of having a head carb latch onto your face in VR is pretty terrifying.

So we decided that one of the best ways to psychologically prepare yourself for that experience is by playing Half-life 1 and Half-life 2 in VR, which now you can do because there are some excellent modding tools available.

We’ll be showing you how to play both half-life 1 and 2 in VR here.

Note: You must own the actual game(s) for this to work. If you don’t already have them, you can take full benefit of the situation where the entire Half-Life franchise is free to play on Valve’s Steam platform until Half-Life: Episode 3 launches on 23 March.

How to Play Half-Life 1 in VR?

German modder Max Volmer has created an amazing Half-Life 1 VR experience. It includes everything you’d expect from a full-blown VR game, including teleportation, proper reloading, and even ladder climbing. You can get the Half-Life 1 VR demo here.

  1. After downloading the archived copy of Half-Life 1 for SteamVR, extract it to your Half-Life install directory (C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common by default).
  2. After extracting the files from the.zip archive, you’ll see a ‘VR’ subdirectory inside the HL2\basegame\bin directory.
  3. Double-clicking on this will cause the Half-Life VR Launcher to be opened. From there, click ‘Patch Game’, then click ‘Launch’. You’ll now need to have Steam running for the game to start up.
  4. You need to install the Max Vollmer HL1 v0.2 Beta mod before using it. To access the SteamVR configuration screen, press the controller buttons that take you to the SteamVR configuration screen.
  5. Then, click on “Controller Bindings” and choose one of the custom bindings made by the mod author.
  6. Some users may experience issues when playing the game for the first time. To fix these issues, save the game before loading it again.

If you want to use any of the popular mods for Half-Life 2, including the ones that add new weapons, enemies, items, etc., you can simply download them from Steam Workshop and install them using the Steam client.

How to Play Half-Life 2 in VR?

It may be difficult to play Half-Life 2 in full virtual reality (VR), but if you’re willing to use the silly sandbox game Garry’s Mode, you can get some fun out of playing Half-Life 2 in virtual reality.

You can’t reload or pause your game in this version, but you can choose from different levels. Once you’re in, though, it’s an impressively immersive VR experience.

  1. You must first download Half-Life 2 and then install it on your computer before installing Garry’s Mod.
  2. Then, visit the Steam Workshop for Garry’s Mod, and look for an addon called “VRMod – Experimental Virtual Reality”.
  3. You’ll also need the accompanying Garry’s Mod installation file. Then, you’ll need to install the module into your game using the instructions provided in the installation file.
  4. If your screen resolution is only 1080p, then you’ll need to enable Dynamic Super Resolution or DSR (Nvidia graphic cards) or Virtual Super Resolution or VSR (AMD graphic cards).
  5. If you want to get the best quality images for your VR headset, you’ll need to download these files.
  6. To activate DSR on an NVIDIA card, open the Nvidia Control Panel, select “Nvidia Settings”, then go to “Display” > “Virtual Super Resolution”. On an AMD card, launch the Radeon Adrenalin app, then go to “Display”, then “Radeon Settings” > “Advanced Features” > “VRAM Overclock”.
  7. Next, open Garry’s Mod
  8. Go into Garry’s Mod options, then video settings, and change the display mode to something that’s comfortable at least 4K. You may need to turn on DSR or Virtual super resolution to get higher resolutions.
  9. How high you set the resolution depends on the performance of your graphics card, but if you’re having trouble keeping up with the framerate, just lower the resolution until you reach a setting that works well.
  10. Clicking the Half-Life 2 icon brings up a list of all the levels in Half-Life 2. They aren’t in any particular sequence, so if you want the first level in the game, click d1_trainStation_01.
  11. If you don’t want to give out any items when you first start the game, check the “Give weapon on respawn” option on the right side of the screen.
  12. When playing the game, press Q on your keyboard, go to the ‘Utilities’ menu, select ‘VR Mod Utility’, tick the ‘Automatically start VR after maps load’ box, then click ‘Start VR’.

And that’s it! Now you’re ready to play Half-Life: Alyx through the legendary mix of suspenseful action and horror from the first two games – in full immersion VR. Practice that crowbar jump because those head crab zombies are now scarier than ever.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Garry’s Mod in VR offers an immersive and interactive experience that can elevate your creative and gaming adventures. By using the right VR headset, installing the necessary modifications, and optimizing your game settings, you can enjoy Garry’s Mod in a whole new dimension.

Remember that your experience may vary depending on your setup, so don’t hesitate to explore different configurations and engage with the Garry’s Mod community for additional insights.

With the right preparation and a spirit of experimentation, you’re all set to delve into the limitless world of Garry’s Mod in virtual reality. Happy gaming!
