Create 3D Models with Virtual Reality

As augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) become more prevalent in healthcare, manufacturing, engineering, architecture, construction, training, and education industries, the demand for 3D content is increasing.

As technology continues to evolve, our communications are becoming increasingly three-dimensional.

History of VR Software

Sophisticated Softwares

Four years ago, creating 3D models was difficult because you needed to use complex programs like Blender, Maya or Autodesk. These programs were too complicated for most people to use.

Tilt Brush

Then came Tilt Brush (April 2016), a software that lets you draw in 3D in VR. It is a good design application that works.

Series of 3D Designs or Drawing Applications

After that, a number of 3D design applications were released on the market. Some of them were Quill, Medium, Blockly, Gravity Sketch, and TVORI. They had different approaches, usability, feature sets, and target audiences.

For creating compelling, immersive presentations, we will look at a few apps that are easy to learn and work well.

Best VR Software

Maquette

Maquette is an open-source project developed by a team at Microsoft. It is available for free.

Availability

You can download it from Steam, which means you’ll need a desktop VR setup like an HTC Vive, Microsoft Mixed Reality VR, or Oculus Rift. It has lots of features that make making content easy and fast.

Strengths

It has strong alignment capabilities.

Full-Featured

It has lots of features, so it takes some practice to learn them all completely, but if you want to quickly create simple 3D objects using Blender, you can start by watching its tutorial videos.

Export

Maquette allows you to export 3D models in glTF, which is the file format used by AfterNow Prez.

Gravity Sketch

For a very long time, Gravity Sketch was my best tool.

Once you’ve passed the initial learning curve, using the gamepad is easy.

Accuracy

It’s one of the best 3D modeling software available for creating detailed 3D models quickly. Its layer system allows you to easily sketch out ideas and polish them into finished products.

Availability

You can use it on both desktop PCs and the Quest.

Drawback

A downside is that it can be expensive if you need all the features.

Tutorial

Their video tutorials are a good place to start if you want to get familiar with the controllers’ features. They take about 10 to 20 minutess. After that, they’re easy to use.

Export

The basic edition only exports in OBJ file format, which is not supported by AfterNow Prezi. It requires additional steps to convert into GLB format for use with AfterNow Prezi.

Sketchbox

Sketchbox is a free, easy-to-use 3D creation tool. Similar to Maquette in its user interface, it lacks some advanced features.

Multi-User Capability

It has several strengths including its ability to support multiple users at once, its ability to allow for collaboration between different people, and its ability to let others see your project from within VR.

Cost

The second advantage is that it supports the quest, and it’s free! It’s the only free game development software for Quest.

Drawing Tools

Tilt Brush

Tilt Brush was among the first VR painting apps. It focused more on the artistic side than the technical aspects of creating art.

Tilt Brush is similar to Adobe Photoshop or Concept apps, whereas Gravity Sketch is similar to Adobe Illustrator.

You’ll have lots of great tools for creating complex shapes, but it may be hard to create simple shapes like squares or circles.

Availability

You can use Tilt Brush on both PC and Oculus Quest. However, the Oculus Quest version exports directly.glb (GLB) file formats. These are compatible with AfterNow Prez.

Quill

A tool that allows users to draw directly onto a canvas. It can be used to create animations, drawings, paintings, and much more. It is similar to Adobe Photoshop, but instead of being a photo editing program, it is an art creation application.

Sculpting Tools

Medium

Similar to Quill (http://quilljs.com), it’s a tool for designers to build interactive prototypes. It allows users to draw directly into the browser without needing to install any plugins. It’s easy to use and allows very organic and curvy designs.

Blocks by Google

Block is a good free 3D modeling software for creating simple objects quickly. It’s easy to use and has most of the features needed to get started.

Low Poly

Low poly refers to small numbers of polygons, which results in better-performing 3D objects for VR and AR devices.

Integrated

Blocks are integrated with Poly.Google.com, a website where users can share their creative works using Tilt Brush and Blocks

Animation Tools

TVori

With TVori, you can easily animate objects in 3 dimensions and record their paths and speeds. You don’t need any special skills or knowledge to use TVori.

You can then go back in time to gradually improve your animations.

Prototyping for AR/VR Applications

It started out as 3D modeling and animating software, and has since evolved into an application for creating prototypes for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications.

It’s easier than Maquette but has fewer options. However, it supports animation which is useful when prototyping.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for a quick way to create 3D models, Maquette and Gravity Sketch are two excellent choices. If you want something more powerful, try Sketchbox.
