VRChat on Quest: Avatar Performance Woes

If you’re using VRChat on the Oculus Go, you may have seen your fair number of gray robots. And if you’re using VRChat for the Oculus Quest, you may have noticed that there are a ton of them.

How Is VRChat Going to Address Very Poor Avatars on Quest?

We’ll begin by focusing on the “Perf Blocked” gray robots. There are several ways to get there, but we’ll be taking things slowly at first. Here’s our plan for now.

Since the hardware landscape has evolved a bit, we’re going to increase the polygon counts for the Very Poor, Poor, Medium, Good, and Excellent performance ranks.

This is an approximate double (plus a little more) of the previous limit for polygon counts. We’ve got some new plans for the performance rank that might allow us to be more precise about where we apply pressure.

If/when those plans come into effect, we’ll tell you. Those plans will be coming out in the next version of the game, which is currently in open beta.

To clarify, these changes don’t affect VRChat on PC at all.

We will take some preventive measures to close the tap of Very Poor avitors. Most of them originate from avatar worlds, so they will:

Find the most popular avatars with Quest avatar pedestal ratings that are mostly (or entirely) rated as Very Poor.

Request that the creators of these words either improve their models or remove them from our database.

If nothing is done, the world will disappear from the search results.

For now, we’d like to implement some new rules and restrictions. We’re hoping that by making these adjustments, we’ll be able to address the “gray robot” issue and improve overall performance.

We will start this process at the same time we launch our next version.
