Samsung Gear VR Overview

The Samsung Gear VR (also known as the Galaxy Gear) is a mobile phone-powered virtual reality headset produced by Samsung Electronics. It was released in October 2014.

On October 2, 2014, Apple unveiled its new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus smartphones during an event held in San Fransisco, California. They were available for pre-order starting November 5, 2014, and shipped from December 6, 2014.

The Gear VR has had two different models: One using the Galaxy Note 4 as the main screen, and another using the Galaxy S5 as the main screen. Both models are compatible for use with either Google Cardboard or Daydream View headsets.

The Gear VR has one front-mounted camera, which lets you view what you’re seeing in real life while wearing virtual reality goggles. It also tracks your movements and distance from the headset.

These sensors let the user interact with objects in the VR environment without touching them directly.

Compatibility & Connectivity

The Gear VR works with most smartphones running Android OS v4.3 or higher. Certain smartphones, however, may not be compatible with the Gear VR due to their hardware limitations.

For example, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 cannot be used with the Gear VR because it doesn’t support the required USB Type-C connector. Furthermore, the Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy 7, and Galaxy 8 don’t support the Gear VR because they don’t have a microSD memory slot.

This VR headset works for any smartphone running Android 5.0 Lollipop or later. Resolution and display types both vary depending on the phone.

And smartphones require Samsung Galaxy S7/S8/Note

Since its release in 2014, the Oculus Rift has been updated almost annually to stay up to date with Samsung’s newest smartphones and screen resolutions.

The Gear VR works with Bluetooth wireless technology and requires an internet connection. If your phone doesn’t already have built-in WiFi capability, you’ll need to purchase a separate USB dongle.

Before you can use the Gear VR, you’ll first need to download applications from the Google Play store. Some games may only play on the Gear VR if their developers specifically design them for the device.

Most phones running Android 5.0 or higher can be used with the Gear VR. Some phones may not meet the minimum requirements for using the Gear VR.

Main Features

Includes a Gear VR Controller. You can buy the controller separately for $40.

The Gear VR headset works best when paired with a compatible phone, but it can also be used with phones and tablets that run Android 5.0 or later. It features an integrated 3D display for viewing virtual reality content.

Design & Features

The Gear VR is made from plastic and weights about 650g. It has a strap that connects to your phone via a proprietary port which needs to be connected to your phone to provide the necessary juice for powering the device and connecting it to your phone.

It has a clear plastic lens protector that covers the lenses when the headset is not in active use. When you put the headphones on, the protective case opens up and then closes back over the lenses. A small hole in the middle allows you to still view through it.

On the headset’s side, a small switch turns off the screen and adjusts its brightness. Pressing this switch twice opens up the headset’s main menu.

There is a magnetic piece that connects the headphones to the smartphone when they’re not in use. To disconnect them, just pull the device away from the headphones.

Conclusion

If you want to experience virtual reality without having to carry around a bulky PC, the Gear VR is one of the easiest ways to do so. The headset itself isn’t very heavy, but it does weigh more than other headsets like the HTC Vive or PlayStation VR.
