Sony’s new Playstation VR 2 Headset for the Playstation 5 is set to release sometime in 2023.

With the release growing nearer, we decided to compile everything we know so far about the PS VR 2 Headset.

This post will delve into how much the Playstation VR 2 Headset will potentially cost as well as some other interesting aspects of the upcoming device.

Quick Summary

In this post, we will shed light upon:

  • The speculative price of the Playstation VR 2 Headset
  • The confirmed features of the PS VR 2
  • The potential release date for the PS VR 2
  • Exciting games have been announced for the PS VR 2

So without further ado, let’s get started.

How Much Will the Sony PS VR 2 Headset Cost?

We still don’t really know what the exact price of Sony’s latest virtual reality headset for the Playstation 5 will be. However, if we take a look at the price range of the PS VR Headset upon release, we can safely speculate that it will be somewhere near the £399/$399 price point.

This is the same price at which the PS VR Headset was released back in 2016.

The PS VR 2 is already slated to have some great virtual reality exclusives on it. Hence, we might see different bundle packages being released as well, which might bump up the price by fifty to a hundred dollars or so.

Once the PS VR 2 Headset is released, we’ll most likely see a steep drop in the price of the original PS VR Headset.

Hence, if you’re someone that still has a Playstation 4 and can’t afford a newer generation console, you could get your hands on the original PS VR without spending a lot of money.

We hope that once the second iteration of Sony’s Playstation VR Headset releases, the first iteration will become as, if not more, affordable than the Oculus Quest 2. For context, the Oculus Quest 2 currently sells for £299/$299.

PS VR 2 Headset Confirmed Features

Over the years since the PS VR 2 was first announced, we’ve slowly gotten new information from Sony regarding the headset’s specifications.

Here’s a brief and comprehensive list of the features that have been confirmed:

  • The field of view will be 110 degrees.
  • The resolution will be 2000×2040 per eye.
  • The frame rate will be 90 frames per second
  • The refresh rate will be 120 Hertz.
  • It will feature a see-through view that’ll let you see your real-life surroundings without having to take the headset off.
  • An all-new broadcast feature that’ll allow you to film yourself as you experience VR.
  • A customizable play area that works by utilizing the PS VR 2 Sense controllers and embedded cameras to scan your space and customize the area to be used.
  • A VR mode as well as a cinematic mode.

In February 2022, Sony also released the first look of the Playstation VR 2 Headset to the world.

The design is pretty much inspired by the look of the Playstation 5 console itself. This is especially true when you take a close look at the design since it fits perfectly with the look and feel of the Playstation 5.

We particularly like the rounded-edge design for the PS VR 2 Headset because it gives it a much more comfortable look and feels. We haven’t had the chance to test it, of course, but we’re hoping that it’ll actually be comfortable to wear as well.

PS VR 2 Potential Release Date

While we did originally say that the PS VR 2 is slated to release in 2023, that’s really not confirmed.

We’re still in the dark when it comes to when we’ll actually be able to get our hands on the headset for the Playstation 5.

Many industry experts have speculated that Sony might go with an end-of-year release in 2022.

A report by Bloomberg stated that if this is going to be the case, then it’ll most likely be during the holiday season of 2022.

However, an industry analyst named Ross Young stated on Twitter that VR display shipments were rising rapidly in 2022. This indicated the mass-production cycle for the Playstation VR 2 Headset.

If this is truly the case, then we most likely will not see the Playstation VR 2 Headset in stores until 2023. However, the earliest we can hope for is still the holiday season for 2022. Fingers crossed!

Games Set to Release for the PS VR 2 Headset

With the release inching ever closer, it’s very important for Sony to have strong and exciting titles backing the PS VR 2 Headset.

If you don’t have any exciting games to play with it, why would anyone even buy it on release?

Luckily, Sony has already announced some very exciting VR titles that will work with the PS VR 2 Headset on release. Some of them are older titles that will be compatible with the headset whereas others are all-new titles that have not been released on any other platform.

The titles that have been announced so far include the following:

  • Horizon Call of the Mountain
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Resident Evil 4 Remake
  • No Man’s Sky
  • The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution
  • Demeo
  • Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge Enhanced Edition

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

No.

The PS VR 2 Headset will track you and your controller movements through 4 cameras that are embedded within the headset itself. Hence, you won’t have to set up or worry about any external camera.

Will the PS VR 2 be Wireless?

No. It will require a single cable between the Playstation 5 console and the headset itself to be properly utilized.

While this is what the case will be on release, who knows? Sony might come up with a wireless solution sometime in the future.

Will the PS VR 2 be Backwards-Compatible?

No. At the moment, it does not seem like Sony has any plans for the PS VR 2 Headset to be backward-compatible.

Hence, if you want to play VR games designed for the PS4, you’ll most likely still need the original PS VR Headset.

How Much Does the PS VR 2 Weigh?

The PS VR 2 Headset is speculated to weigh somewhere between 550 to 600 grams.

How Much Will the PS VR 2 Cost?

As mentioned earlier, while there’s no official price that has been announced by Sony, we can still safely say it’ll be somewhere around $399.

This is the same price that the original PS VR Headset was released at.

Conclusion

Everyone’s excited for the next generation of virtual reality, and rightfully so.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen massive growth in the world of VR, and it’s showing no signs of stopping. Back in the day, the jump from Playstation 1 to Playstation 2 was considered to be the biggest jump in gaming tech ever.

Could the PS VR 2 Headset do the same? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
