With the launch of the Google Pixel 4 in 2019, Google debuted its custom Soli radar sensor for motion tracking and real-time depth capture using Motion Sense. However, this technology had limited practical applications and was discontinued the Pixel 5 release a year later.

At last, the 2021 Nest Hub (2nd gen) features that technology, enabling Sleep Sensing on the smart display.

Initially announced as a feature of Fitbit Premium, Google later confirmed that Sleep Sensing would be free up until 2022. However, recently Google reversed this decision and Sleep Sensing will now remain free for another year.

Nest Hub’s Product Page

According to 9to5Google, Google has quietly edited its Nest Hub product page so that Sleep Sensing will be free to use for the year 2023.

Saving

Your smart display will have an extra year of sleep tracking for free, and if you’re not a Fitbit Premium member, this equals out to an $80 yearly saving. Unless Google chooses to extend the preview program again, you’ll need to subscribe to Fitbit Premium in 2023.

Take a look at the latest news about the technology world and how it’s progressing.

Sleep Tracking Feature

Google is likely aiming to enhance the sleep-tracking capability of the Nest Hub further which is why they are offering another year of free usage for it in 2023.

Upgrade

In 2021, Google improved its sleep sensing algorithm in order to better understand the different types of sleep stages, as well as their quality and duration.

Sound Detection

Sound detection was also updated to limit its tracking area so that it did not inadvertently count the coughs and snores made by your significant others as your own.

Conclusion

When we reviewed the Nest Hub in 2021, we were doubtful of its value as a sleep tracker, given that it would require a paid subscription.

With the Sleep Sensing preview program being extended for an extra year and the Nest Hub coming in as low as $50, it’s possible that Google’s smart display could be a great sleep tracking choice for people who don’t prefer wearing a smartwatch when they sleep.
