Along with its new icon, Google Contacts has gone through many changes over the past year, and the newest addition is its “Highlights” tab.

Highlights

  • The “Highlights” section is located in between “Contacts” and “Fix & manage” in the Material You bottom menu.
  • Beneath the search bar, you can find a grid with four icons per row labeled “Favorites”.

It’s more comprehensive compared to the Phone app’s “Favorites” tab, and you can quickly add new ones from the top-right corner.

Favorites

Along with the list of Favorites at the top of the main tab, there is now a grid coexisting – providing two ways to view it.

Recents

After that is the “Recents” list, starting with items on the “View Recently” tab. Each contact also shows when it was last viewed and you can clear your viewing history via the overflow menu.

Added Recently

The “Added recently” section completes the list, and is the most advantageous of this updated UI.

Recently, Google Contacts was revamped to be a three-tab app with an extra navigation drawer in the main list view. It looks quite cluttered now.

Fix & Manage

The tab labeled “Fix & manage” did an okay job of displaying various features offered by the app, but it’s uncertain if it necessitated a separate tab.

Rather than replacing the Favorites list, the new contacts grid should simply be added to the top of the main list; and Recents can remain in the Manage tab.

Despite that, Google Contacts’ Highlights tab is theorized to be the primary means of access for people. Searching would take the place of scrolling and the grid element is more visually appealing than a list.
