FromSoftware’s epic open-world action RPG was also one of the most highly rated games on HowLongToBeat.com.

Elden Ring

2022 was the year that Elden Ring was propelled into the limelight, with FromSoftware’s newest game swelling in popularity in a way that no other of its creations had before.

Given this, a great many people played and beat Elden Ring. In fact, according to one report, Elden Ring was the most completed game of 2022.

Surprisingly, however, the same source states that this was also the game most players stopped playing before completing it.

If you’ve visited a gaming site like Kotaku in 2022, then you should already be acquainted with Elden Ring, the newest installment from the creators of Dark Souls, FromSoftware.

Tough RPG

Just like Dark Souls and Bloodborne, Elden Ring is an amazingly tough action RPG with an emphasis on mystery, environment creation, and challenging fights against bosses.

For this version, FromSoftware included a genuine open world to their familiar “Soulslike” battle system. The end product? One of the top-rated and best-selling games of 2022.

Open World Feature of Elden Ring

The open-world feature of Elden Ring enticed many people to play, allowing them to bypass challenging sections until they were ready and making it seem simpler than other FromSoftware pursuits. It appears that this design decision was successful.

According to HowLongToBeat.com, over 6,000 users have completed the massive open-world RPG Elden Ring from 2022, making it the most finished game.

Looking at the other games in the list, it’s quite stunning that Stray, the endearing cyberpunk cat game, was completed by almost 4,000 players.

Coming in third place with 2,500 completions was the Nintendo Switch and Game Freak game, Pokemon Legends: Arceus.

The fact that such a big and tricky game is at the top of the list is both an indication of just how good Elden Ring is, as well as an insight into who comprises HowLongToBeat.com’s main audience.

Most Relinquished Game

More interestingly, Elden Ring is the most ‘relinquished’ game. When players mark a game as ‘retired’ on Howlongtobeat.com, it indicates that they have given up on it, either temporarily or permanently.

Despite the fact that only 261 players retired from Elden Ring listed on the website, this is still more than double any other game in 2022.

Even though the dataset may be limited in size and not entirely accurate (how many people even log in to simply accept defeat?), it’s still a noteworthy data point.

With Elden Ring being the most popular game of 2022 and a lot of people getting their hands on it, it makes sense that some may stop playing. It all adds up to me.

Judging by other data, around half of the gamers playing Elden Ring didn’t finish the game. Thus, it’s entirely possible that Elden Ring will be one of the most completed games of 2022 while also being the game that more people abandoned than any other.

Another interesting piece of data from the website for 2022: Elden Ring is also featured in the most backlogs, has the most reviews, and is the longest game in 2022.

Despite this, Naughty Dog’s The Last Of Us Part 1 is the game with the highest ratings, while Diablo Immortal is the worst-reviewed.
