Canva has announced the launch of its new Canva Docs service, which combines a word-processing tool with a publishing platform. It will also add a generative AI writing tool called Magic Write.

Canva Whiteboard

Canva has just launched its new product called Whiteboard, which lets people create presentations and share them online. It’s similar to Microsoft PowerPoint but without the need for an Office 365 subscription.

Canva Docs

The design platform first introduced Docs at its inaugural event, called “Docs Day”. It was launched in September 2017 at the company’s annual conference, which focused on creating content for brands. Users across different departments can now collaborate on projects together in real-life using the tool.

There are also many pre-designed templates available in Canva’s new product, so users can quickly get started without having to learn any code.

Magic Write

Magic Write uses OpenAI’s GPT‑3 language model to create content for any given topic. It can produce articles, tweets, blogs, etc., depending on the input provided by the user.

During a demo, Jen Thompson, a Product Marketer at Canva, created an idea for a post about the World Cup in just seconds using the technology. She then quickly typed out a paragraph about her home city of San Francisco in just seconds.

“MagicWrite in some ways is comparable with designing templated websites. You don’t have t struggle with something that conceptually might be really challenging for you.”

However, don’t count on this software to write your high school essays and get you into an ivy league school. While Open AI’s GPT-3 is robust, it still doesn’t have the quality of a professional writer. It’s meant to be used as a creative starting point instead of a blank page.

You can get unlimited uses of Magic Write for free if you’re a regular user of Canva. But if you want to be able to create multiple documents at once, you’ll need to upgrade to Pro or Team.

Even though Magic Write doesn’t offer anything new, as many people already have access to OpenAI’s tech, Canva has over 100 million monthly active users who can request access to their platform.

Magic Write is just one of several ways Canva is making its products accessible to people who might not otherwise be able to use them.

“At Canva we believe that making complex tasks easier makes them accessible for everyone. As you make something easier, it allows others to do more of it too.”

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial intelligence (AI) powers many of Canva’s popular features, from removing backgrounds to generating images for social media posts. Last year, Canva bought the startup behind the technology, Kaleidoscope, which was built using AI. It now uses Generative AI Image Searches, which allow people to generate their own images.

Adams said that Canva is working closely with OpenAI to figure out the capabilities of GPT-3, as well as the limitations of the model.

Together, we’ve been working on things like trust and security and the ethical use of artificial intelligence.

“We’re really committed to shaping the technologies that power both Magic Write and Text to Image in ways suited for their respective user bases and doing so in a way that ensures safety and ethics.”
