A few Reddit users have reported an unusual issue with their iPhone 14 Pro Max devices; when they wake up their phones, horizontal lines will sometimes appear on the screen.

The number of lines can differ. Fortunately, Apple states this is not a hardware problem so it could be resolved by releasing a software update.

This is a more favorable situation for Apple and its customers compared to having to execute a recall and exchange the affected products.

Problems with iPhone 14

The Reddit user 1LastOutlaw discussed the issue with his iPhone 14 Pro Max: “I noticed that occasionally when my phone awakens, horizontal lines will flicker on the display.

That only happens sometimes. It could be one line or many. I brought it to Apple and they implemented diagnostics tests and all the outcomes were satisfactory (green).

The technician stated that nothing was wrong with the hardware but rather it might have something to do with how the software is written.”

Apple Suggested a Factory Reset and This Did Not Stop the Horizontal Lines From Showing Up

Despite Apple suggesting a factory reset and updating to iOS 16.2, the problem still remains.

Others on the platform have likewise complained about this issue, an example being Reddit member sabllz who even included a photo of their iPhone 14 Pro Max displaying multiple horizontal lines across the screen.

Some users that have iPhone 14 Pro Max are seeing horizontal lines when the device is activated.

Furthermore, the discussion isn’t only occurring on Reddit; someone by the name of Satyatejakasula on the Apple support community posted, “Hello, I purchased a brand new iPhone 14, Pro Max, today, but I think I’m having an issue (which I hope is just caused by the software).

Whenever I lock my phone, turn off the screen and then turn it back on, a short-lived horizontal line appears across 1/3 of the screen and that part of the display is brighter than the rest. However, once I get to the Lock Screen, this line fades away and the display proceeds as normal.

Even after turning off TrueTone, auto-brightness, and tapping to wake, the issue persists. Restarting and performing a force reset did not work either. I’m using iOS 16.1.2.

Apple Has Announced a Software Update to Fix the Major Display Issue on the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Those Posting a Complaint All Have iPhone 14 Pro Max Units Purchased Earlier This Month

A Reddit user by the name of bit shared his experience with a flickering screen on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, saying “Hi everyone, I’ve had my 14 pro max for 12 days now.”

During the past few days (approximately 4-5), when I’ve woken up my computer to do something, it has occasionally flickered on and off for a fraction of a second. Initially, I believed these flashes were caused by lights nearby.

But then this happened more than once. It only lasts less than one second every time it appears after I turn on the screen. Is anyone else facing this issue? It’s a newly bought device, so naturally, it was a significant investment – which is why I’m concerned.

Notably, all people complaining have the newest iPhone 14 Pro Max that they bought recently.

What Does Apple Know About This?

Currently, it is unclear what’s causing the problem, however, people who go to their local Apple store were told that it is a software issue.

One Apple support member mentioned, “We recognize the problem and it appears to be because of the drivers…It’s actually a software problem and an update is anticipated soon.”

Even stranger than the horizontal lines on these displays is that this bug seems to be isolated to a specific model, and all affected units are believed to have been purchased in December. This type of pattern could possibly make it simpler for Apple to find an effective solution.
