Android 14 has added support for the DualSense Edge controller, Sony’s premium accessory for its PlayStation 5 console. The operating system now properly supports the controller and maps button presses to input events.

DualSense Edge Controller

The DualSense Edge controller is Sony’s answer to Microsoft’s Elite controller lineup for its Xbox consoles. It features swappable joysticks, back buttons, and other features that make it a premium gaming accessory.

Android Support for DualSense Edge

Until now, Android only supported a range of wireless controllers including the PS4’s DualShock 4 and the PS5’s vanilla DualSense, but not the more premium Edge version. However, with Android 14, the operating system now has proper support for the DualSense Edge controller.

Additional Requirements for Using DualSense Edge Controller

In addition to the layout files, your device will need a new hid-PlayStation kernel patch to properly support the DualSense Edge controller. This is because the new controller has a different product ID, and the current driver by Sony doesn’t work with it.

Manual Support from Sony

Android requires manual support from Sony for new PlayStation controllers. The regular DualSense wasn’t properly supported by smartphones until Android 12.

Is it Worth it for Mobile Gaming?

While it is possible to play games on your Android 14 phone with the DualSense Edge controller, it is not recommended to buy one solely for mobile gaming. The controller is expensive and there are cheaper options available that can serve just as well.

However, if you already own one and want to use it on your phone from time to time, this change would allow you to do so.

Wait Time for Android 14 Release

Keep in mind that Android 14 is still a few months away, so there may be a wait before you can take advantage of this new support.

Conclusion

This update to Android 14 means that users of the DualSense Edge controller can now enjoy an immersive mobile gaming experience. If you own a DualSense Edge controller and an Android phone, you can now take advantage of this new support to upgrade your gaming setup.
