Developed by Louis Waloschek (and other developers) The Gecko Gods is an upcoming exploration and puzzle game that sees the player taking control of a gecko as it navigates its way around an expansive island.

Yesterday the game’s popularity increased just a little bit when the developer announced it would be released for Switch, and it certainly looks adorable.

The Gecko Gods

To me, the most interesting thing about the gecko is that it can climb on walls and ceilings, making new spaces to explore and design puzzles around in its temples.

This means that they have to take into account how players will use the environment while climbing and solving puzzles, creating an entirely different experience.

Sailing Segments

On The Gecko Gods, there are also sailing segments that are incredibly cute as the tiny gecko attempts to sail by itself – having to maneuver the boat with its mouth and operate the motor to make it start and stop.

This interesting design choice gives you the opportunity to experience what it’s like being a non-human thing utilizing something designed for humans.

Combat Section

Fingers crossed that the newness keeps people from getting bored. Exploration and problem-solving are balanced out with combat sections, even though our gecko friend isn’t shown carrying any weaponry in the trailer. It looks like it has a mean bite and is pretty nimble.

Inspiration

PhosoQuest is clearly drawing from different Legends of Zelda titles, for example, the sailing in Wind Waker and much of Breath of the Wild’s atmosphere and character design. All-in-all it seems to be aiming for mystery and peace – I’m definitely interested.

Scheduled for release in 2023, The Gecko Gods will be available on both Steam and Nintendo Switch.
