Meta has announced a new feature in its Horizon Worlds VR social network, known as “quests”, which allows users to complete in-game missions to earn virtual rewards such as clothing.

Although the feature is currently only available for beta testing in a game called Giant Mini Paddle Golf, Meta plans to roll it out to more users over time.

Quests Feature in Beta Testing

The quests feature is currently in beta testing via Giant Mini Paddle Golf. Those in the test group will see a new “Quests” icon in their Identity Panel, which will open the new quests board to show six quests and the rewards to be earned.

Users can travel around the world and get started with just one click. Meta plans to offer quests in other areas of Horizon Worlds as a way to give Quest VR headset users more to do.

Plans for Expansion

Meta recently announced plans to release 20 new Horizon experiences built by third-party studios, and quests feature is likely to be part of these. The Horizon Worlds user base was reportedly around 200,000 at the end of 2022, well short of the goal it originally set.

Controversy over Opening Horizon Worlds to Children

Meta recently faced criticism over its decision to open Horizon Worlds up to children between 13-17 years old. Two US senators have expressed concern over Meta’s track record in protecting younger users.

Conclusion

Meta’s introduction of the ‘quests’ feature is a promising development for the Horizon Worlds VR social network, offering users a new way to engage with the platform and earn virtual rewards.

Although the feature is currently in beta testing, Meta plans to roll it out to more users over time, and it may even be incorporated into the 20 new Horizon experiences the company plans to release.
